Tips Membangun Ekosistem Komunitas Film: Belajar dari Pengalaman Ade Hidayat di Kalimantan

Ekosistem film di Kalimantan belum berkembang dan bisa dibilang sama sekali tidak ada. Padahal Kalimantan memiliki harta cerita yang melimpah meski kurangnya wawasan mengenai ekosistem dan tradisi film. Itu dulu, sebelum Ade mulai merintis budaya film di sana. Ade Hidayat, Alumni Komunikasi UII angkatan 2005, menceritakannya pengalamannya ini pada pemirsa live Instagram IP Komunikasi UII (@ip.communication.uii).

Paparannya tersebut disampaikan dalam acara bincang-bincang rutin “Teatime” episode ke-12 pada 18 September 2020. Acara yang dipandu M. Iskandar T. Gunawan, Laboran Laboratorium Komunikasi UII, ini juga mengulik pengalaman Ade Hidayat yang inspiratif. Misal bagaimana ia merakit keterampilannya di bidang film sejak masih kuliah di semester awal.

Kisahnya menunjukkan Ade bukan pemain baru dalam dunia film. Ia juga  merupakan pionir sejak aktifitasnya di komunitas perfilman di Komunikasi UII beberapa tahun silam dengan membangun Kompor.kom (komunitas mahasiswa di bidang film). Kisahnya melambung hingga cerita tentang kegigihannya membangun budaya perfilman di kampung halamannya.

Kurangnya komunitas dan orang orang yang peduli dengan ekosistem film adalah isu yang paling penting mengapa Ade ingin menghidupkan ekosistem film di kalimantan. Menghidupkan ekosistem perfilman yang dilakukan Ade tidak secepat itu membuahkan hasil. Ia membutuhkan waktu tujuh tahun lamanya.

Selama 2 tahun mengamati ekosistem film di kalimantan, Ade akhirnya mendapatkan teman yang sesuai dengan semangatnya. Mulanya ia membuat Screening Film dan peta besar rencana kegiatan perfilman. Ini , makan waktu lima tahun. Tahun pertama, ia membuat program yang bernama Ngofi. Tahun kedua, tahun edukasi film. Tahun ketiga, ia bikin produksi film sederhana. Lalu pada tahun keempat,  produksi film dilakukan kembali sekaligus menggencarkan distribusinya. Sayangnya, rencana di tahun kelima mandeg terhalang oleh pandemi Covid-19.

Produksi Film dan Konsistensi

Semangat Ade tak muncul begitu saja. Banyak juga sineas di daerah lain juga memengaruhi. Misalnya, film Makassar yang berjudul Uang Panai yang menelan biaya produksi sekira 450 juta rupiah.  Target penonton film produksi lokal tersebut bisa menyentuh angka 550 ribu penonton.

Tak hanya itu, Uang Panai mendapatkan penghargaan khusus untuk Film Produksi Daerah dari Indonesian Box Office Movie Award (IBOMA) pada 2017. Dari sini Ade Hidayat merasa termotivasi dan akhirnya merintis ekosistem film di kalimantan. Harapannya, kelak ia dan sineas di kalimantan memiliki film yang pantas dikenal di seluruh Indonesia bahkan Dunia.

Singkat cerita, Ade kini dapat merasakan budaya perfilman yang kental di daerahnya. Tentu itu tak muncul dari ruang hampa. Kunci sukses Ade dalam dunia film terletak bagaimana selama kuliah ia menciptakan jejaring sosial, kerjasama, serta mempunyai target agar tetap konsisten. Komunikasi adalah kunci dari semuanya,” ujar Ade.

Gunawan, Host dalam diskusi ini, mengatakan pandangan senada. Kuliah adalah ladang mengolah relasi, latihan bekerjasama, dan tidak lupa konsistensi. “Ambil pengalaman sebanyak-banyaknya selama berada di dunia kampus,” pungkas Gunawan.

Tips for Building a Film Community Ecosystem: Learning from Ade Hidayat’s Experience in Kalimantan

The film ecosystem in Kalimantan is underdeveloped and arguably non-existent. In fact, Kalimantan has abundant storytelling despite the lack of insight into the ecosystem and film traditions. That was before Ade started pioneering the film culture there. Ade Hidayat, UII Communications Alumni, class of 2005, shared his experience with live viewers of UII’s IP Communications Instagram (@ ip.communication.uii).

His presentation was delivered in the 12th episode of the routine talk show “Teatime” on September 18, 2020. The event hosted by M. Iskandar T. Gunawan, UII Communication Laboratory Assistant, also explored Ade Hidayat’s inspirational experience. For example, how he assembled his skills in film since he was in college in the first semester.

The story shows Ade is not a new player in the world of film. He is also a pioneer since his activities in the film community at UII Communication Department several years ago by building Kompor.kom (student community in film). His story soared to the story of his persistence in building a film culture in his hometown.

Lack of community and people who care about the film ecosystem is the most important issue why Ade wants to revive the film ecosystem in Kalimantan. Turning on the film ecosystem that Ade did not produce results so quickly. It took him seven years.

For 2 years observing the film ecosystem in Kalimantan, Ade finally got friends who matched his passion. Initially he made film screenings and a large map of film activity plans. This took five years. The first year, he created a program called Ngofi. (film talks) The second year, the film education year. The third year, he made a simple film production. Then in the fourth year, film production was carried out again and at the same time intensified its distribution. Unfortunately, the plans for the fifth year have stalled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Consistency of Film Production

Ade’s spirit did not just appear. Many filmmakers in other areas also influenced it. For example, the Makassar film entitled Uang Panai, which cost about 450 million rupiah to produce. The target audience for this local film production can reach 550 thousand viewers.

Not only that, Uang Panai received a special award for Regional Film Production from the Indonesian Box Office Movie Award (IBOMA) in 2017. Ade Hidayat felt motivated and finally pioneered the film ecosystem in Kalimantan with Uang Panai’s success. The hope is that someday all the filmmakers in Kalimantan have films that deserve to be known throughout Indonesia and even the world.

In simple ways, Ade can now experience the strong film culture in the area. Absolutely, it doesn’t come out of a vacuum. The key to Ade’s success in the world of film lies in how during college he created social networks, collaborations, and has goals to stay consistent. “Communication is the key to everything, ”said Ade.

Gunawan, the Host in this discussion, shared a similar view. Lecture is a field to cultivate relationships, practice collaboration, and not forgetting consistency. “Get as much experience as possible while in the world of campus,” concluded Gunawan.

Teatime # 10: The Spirit of Orientation Period and the Experiences of Communication IP Students of UII

How is the experience of Communication IP class different from the regular class? What was the most memorable experience? Those are the questions that often arise. Responding to that question, Rasya and Daffa shared their experiences during lectures at UII IP communication. During the welcoming day last year, they met a number of study program staff, seniors, lecturers and foreign students.

Presentations and talks at the welcoming day were given in English. This activity is designed so that students can face the international environment. According to Daffa, at that time the lecturers explained what IPC was, as well as interesting little games. This atmosphere creates a strong relationship between them and the entire UII Communication academic community.

This is the conversation that surfaced in the talk show Teatime episode 10. On this occasion, Teatime took place as usual using live broadcasts via Instagram social media. On September 5, 2020, the theme raised was “Take a Peek at The Orientation Days with IPC Student 2019”. M. Daffa Athallariq from IP Communication (IPC) UII (Indonesian Islamic University), class 2019 guided by Rasya, class 2019 talked about the excitement of studying at UII IP Communications as it emerged at the beginning.

Besides the welcoming atmosphere during the welcoming day, the small class capacity also makes students focus more on lecture material. This also creates a culture that is close to lecturers, employees or fellow students. “We were close to lecturers, staff, and seniors even before starting to study at IPC,” said Daffa.

In addition, IPC students always open minded to make friends with non-IP communication students or students of other majors. The reason is of course because the scope of their activities is similar. Apart from the classrooms, the language of instruction is English and different perspectives. The perspective on the material must be seen with an international or global perspective. For example, there are subjects for basic writing, language improvement, and academic writing. Further information and details regarding IPC UII registration can be checked directly on Instagram @ ip.communication.uii. “You have to register quickly, because IP communication is very interesting,” said Rasya.

The interesting thing about being an International Program Student

In the first year, IP students will get an academic writing course with the APA Style reference. Do you have to be good at English at first? Certainly not. Through learning in IPC classes, students will learn about public speaking and basic language through practice. Like writing practice and public speaking. This will certainly help students. Every student has the opportunity to learn. They will learn the process of practicing English directly, said Daffa, “So that’s where learning at IPC feels very interesting!”

Another exciting thing, lecture facilities are also adequate. Complete equipment is available to support lecture practice and assignments. Lecturers have free time for students to ask questions about all things that are still confusing in class. Students can also help each other. With a global perspective learned in IP programs, there are many study opportunities around the world, as well as contacts around the world.

In addition, IPC also has courses that focus on video production. This course deals with film production which is in great demand lately. There are also P2A (Passage to Asean) programs, international seminars and other programs that provide scholarships. This unique experience can only be obtained at the IPC UII second node.

How to understand communication from a global perspective? Students can understand international phenomena by referring to international journals and references. Even though it was tough at first, at IPC they have a strong bond, so they often help each other when faced with various difficulties. Such as language difficulties, reading English journals, and other academic difficulties. “Lecturers are close to students, and there is a class agreement. That makes it easier for us at IPC,” continued Rasya.

Teatime #10: Semangat Masa Orientasi Serta Pengalaman Mahasiswa IP Komunikasi UII

Bagaimana perbedaan pengalaman kelas IP Komunikasi UII dengan kelas reguler? Apa pengalaman yang paling berkesan? Itulah pertanyaan-pertanyaan yang sering muncul. Merespon pertanyaan itu, Rasya dan Daffa berbagi pengalaman mereka selama kuliah di IP komunikasi UII. Saat welcoming day setahun lalu, mereka bertemu dengan sejumlah staf prodi, senior, dosen dan mahasiswa asing.

Presentasi dan pembicaraan saat welcoming day diberikan dalam Bahasa Inggris. Kegiatan ini dibuat agar mahasiswa dapat menghadapi lingkungan internasional. Menurut Daffa, saat itu para dosen menjelaskan apa itu IPC (international Program of Communication), serta permainan-permainan kecil yang menarik. Suasana ini membuat relasi yang kuat antara mereka dan seluruh sivitas akademika Komunikasi UII.

Inilah pembicaraan yang mengemuka di acara bincang-bincang Teatime episode ke 10. Pada kesempatan  kali ini, Teatime berlangsung seperti biasa pakai siaran langsung lewat media sosial Instagram. Pada 5 September 2020 ini, tema yang diangkat adalah “Obrolan Orientasi serta pengalaman Mahasiswa IPC 2019”. M. Daffa Athallariq dari IP Communication (IPC) UII (Universitas Islam Indonesia) angkatan 2019 dipandu Rasya, angkatan 2019 berbincang soal keseruan kuliah di IP Komunikasi UII seperti yang mengemuka di mula.

Selain suasana penyambutan saat welcoming day, kapasitas kelas yang kecil juga membuat mahasiswa lebih fokus pada materi perkuliahan. Ini juga menciptakan kultur yang akrab dengan dosen, karyawan ataupun sesama mahasiswa.”Kami dekat dengan dosen, staf, dan senior bahkan sebelum memulai pembelajaran di IPC,” kata Daffa.

Selain itu mahasiswa IPC tidak menutup diri berteman dengan mahasiswa komunikasi non IP ataupun mahasiswa jurusan lain. Sebabnya tentu karena ruang lingkup aktivitasnya juga serupa. Selain ruang kelasnya, bahasa pengantar dengan Bahasa Inggris dan perspektif juga berbeda. Cara pandang terhadap materi harus dilihat dengan kacamata internasional atau global. Misalnya ada materi perkuliahan basic writing, penyampaian Bahasa, dan academic writing. Informasi lanjutan dan detil mengenai pendaftaran IPC UII dapat cek langsung di Instagram @ip.communication.uii. “Kamu harus daftar cepat ya, karena komunikasi IP sangat menarik,” kata Rasya.

Menariknya menjadi Mahasiswa International Program

Pada tahun pertama, mahasiswa IP akan mendapatkan mata kuliah penulisan akademik dengan referensi APA Style. Apakah mulanya masuk menjadi mahasiswa IP harus pintar bahasa inggris? Tentu tidak. Melalui pembelajaran di kelas IPC, mahasiswa akan belajar tentang public speaking dan dasar berbahasa lewat praktik. Seperti praktik menulis dan public speaking. Ini tentu akan membantu mahasiswa. Setiap mahasiswa mempunyai kesempatan belajar. Mereka akan mempelajari proses berlatih Bahasa inggris secara langsung kata Daffa, “Jadi di situlah pembelajaran di IPC terasa sangat menarik!”

Hal seru lainnya, fasilitas perkuliahan juga memadai. Tersedia peralatan lengkap untuk menunjang praktik perkuliahan dan tugas. Dosen mempunyai waktu luang bagi mahasiswa untuk bertanya tentang segala hal yang masih membingungkan di kelas. Mahasiswa bisa juga saling membantu. Dengan perspektif global ang dipelajari di program IP, ada banyak kesempatan belajar di seluruh dunia, serta relasi di seluruh dunia.

Selain itu, IPC juga memiliki mata kuliah yang memfokuskan ke produksi video. Mata kuliah ini berkaitan dengan produksi film yang banyak diminati belakangan ini. Terdapat juga program P2A (Passage to Asean), seminar internasional dan program lain yang menyediakan beasiswa.  Pengalaman unik ini hanya bisa didapatkan di IPC UII simpul keduanya.

Bagaimana memahami komunikasi dengan perspektif global? Mahasiswa dapat memahami fenomena internasional dengan mengacu pada jurnal-jurnal dan rujukan internasional. Meski awalnya berat, di IPC mereka memiliki ikatan yang kuat sehingga mereka sering saling membantu ketika menghadapi kesulitan yang beragam. Seperti kesulitan berbahasa, membaca jurnal Bahasa inggris, serta kesulitan akademik lainnya. “Dosen dekat denga mahasiswa, serta ada kesepakatan kelas. Itu memudahkan kami di IPC,” sambung Rasya.

Tea Time Episode #11: Get Acquainted with Bridging Program

In this digital era, cyberspace is increasingly crowded and massive. There is a lot of fake news circulating and it is becoming increasingly difficult to figure out which facts and opinions are. Therefore, to avoid fake news and unclear truth, students are required to think critically in finding facts. If students do not have a critical nature, it can become a time bomb and dangerous for their future.

Teatime 11th episode, entitled the theme “Bridging program” in the UII International Program Communication provided those skills to face the digital era and campus environment. This discussion presented an internal lecturer from IP Communication (IPC) UII, Mr. Ginanjar Gailea. This discussion on September 11, 2020, is very interesting because in this discussion the host will present a theme that is characteristic of the IPC program. 

This discussion program was broadcast via IPC’s Live Instagram (@ ip.communication.uii). Nadira Muthia Subhari as the host of IPC accompanied the discussion and shared information related to the Bridging Program with IPC Communication Science lecturer Mr. Ginanjar Gailea. The discussion provides an overview especially for IPC new students.

So the Department of Communication of UII opens special courses that are different from the regular communication science program called “Bridging Program”. In the bridging program, students will discuss with friends and lecturers how to become a student who can think critically. Critical thinking is a skill that helps students to distinguish between facts, opinions, and hoaxes. The Bridging Program is a special facility provided to all UII international student programs of Communication Science. This facility assists international students in preparing them to adapt to the University learning environment and assists in other subjects.

Bridging classes also try to change the student’s perspective. Usually when they are in high school, students are guided step by step in detail, now when they enter the university environment, even the lecturers only provide guidance and the rest is provided by discussions and study independently. The campus world allows lecturers to act as a bridge of knowledge, not to be central knowledge like the high school period. This paradigm must be understood by new students at IPC.

“I will encourage students to enjoy my classes. I realize that every student has a different level of intellectual capacity but that is not the main measure in my class. I want my students to be proactive and confident,” said Ginanjar Gailea.

Bridging programs can also hone the skills (Skills) of a student to be creative and critical and have excellent intuition. If students have these traits it will make students who innovate and ready to face the outside world. Mr. Ginanjar said do not hesitate if there are students who would like to consult about the IP program. “Do not build the scary side of classroom lectures, class was made fun anyway,” said Ginanjar.

What skills learned together in the bridging program? “There are various things,” said Ginanjar. “For example, we will learn together about how to become independent learners, academic writing, develop critical thinking skills, and so on,” he said. These skills will be very useful if they are well understood. According to him, it is always practiced.

He as an IP lecturer will accept students well to get better and ready to face the international world. Mr. Ginanjar hopes that when the pandemic is over, IPC communication science students are ready to come out without hesitation in facing all conditions.

Teatime #11: Nggak Kritis, Ya Krisis

Pada era digital ini, situasi dunia maya semakin crowded. Banyak persebaran berita palsu dan makin lama semakin sulit untuk mencari mana fakta dan opini. Maka dari itu untuk menghindari dari berita palsu dan tidak jelas kebenarannya, mahasiswa diharuskan untuk berfikir kritis dalam mencari fakta suatu informasi. Jika mahasiswa tidak memiliki sifat kritis bisa menjadi bom waktu dan berbahaya pada masa depan mereka.

Teatime episode 11 kali ini  berusaha menjawab itu. Kali ini mengangkat tema tentang “Bridging program” di International Program Komunikasi UII.  Pada diskusi ini menghadirkan dosen internal dari IP Communication (IPC) UII. Diskusi pada 11 September 2020 ini, sangat menarik karena pada diskusi ini tuan rumah akan membawakan tema yang menjadi ciri khas dari program IPC.

Acara diskusi ini disiarkan lewat Live Instagram IPC (@ip.communication.uii). Nadira Muthia Subhari selaku tuan rumah dari IPC mendampingi diskusi dan berbagi tentang informasi terkait dengan Bridging Program bersama dosen Ilmu Komunikasi IPC Mr. Ginanjar Gailea. Diskusi memberikan gambaran khususnya bagi mahasiswa baru IPC.

Maka jurusan Ilmu Komunikasi membuka mata kuliah khusus yang berbeda dengan program ilmu komunikasi regular bernama “Bridging Program”. Pada bridging program mahasiswa akan berdiskusi bersama teman dan dosen bagaimana cara menjadi seoarang mahasiswa yang dapat berfikir kritis,

Berfikir kritis merupakan keterampilan yang membantu mahasiswa untuk membedakan mana yang fakta, opini, dan hoax. Bridging Program adalah fasilitas khusus yang diberikan kepada semua program mahasiswa internasional UII. Fasilitas ini membantu mahasiswa internasional dalam mempersiapkan mereka beradaptasi di lingkungan pembelajaran Universitas dan membantu dalam mata kuliah lain.

Kelas Bridging juga berusaha mengubah cara pandang mahasiswa. Biasanya ketika masih di SMA, pelajar dipandu langkah demi langkah dengan detil, kini ketika masuk lingkungan universitas, bahkan dosen hanya memberikan panduan dan sisanya diskusi dan belajar mandiri. Dunia kampus memungkinkan dosen sebagai jembatan ilmu, bukan menjadi sentral layaknya jaman SMA. Paradigma ini yang harus dipahami oleh mahasiswa baru di IPC.

“Saya akan mendorong mahasiswa untuk menikmati kelas saya. Saya menyadari bahwa setiap mahasiswa memiliki tingkat kapasitas intelektual yang berbeda tetapi itu bukan ukuran utama di kelas saya. Saya ingin dari siswa saya adalah menjadi proaktif dan percaya diri,” kata Ginanjar Gailea.

Bridging program juga dapat mengasah keterampilan (Skill) seorang mahasiswa untuk menjadi kreatif dan kritis serta memiliki intuisi yang sangat baik, Jika mahasiswa memiliki sifat tersebut nantinya akan menjadikan mahasiswa yang berinovasi dan siap menghadapi dunia luar. Mr. Ginanjar mengatakan tidak ragu-ragu jika ada mahasiswa IP yang ingin konsultasi tentang programnya. “Tak usah membangun sisi menakutkan dari kelas kuliah, kelas saya buat menyenangkan kok,” sambung Ginanjar.

Apa saja keterampilan yang dipelajari bersama dalam bridging program? “ada macam-macam,” kata Ginanjar. “Misalanya kita akan belajar bersama tentang bagaimana menjadi pembelajar mandiri, academic writing, mengembangkan kemampuan berpikir kritis, dan lainnya,” katanya. Keterampilan ini akan sangat berguna jika ia dipahami dengan baik dan selalu dipraktikkan menurutnya.

Ia selaku dosen IP akan menerima dengan baik agar mahasiswa tersebut dapat menjadi lebih baik dan siap dengan matang menghadapi dunia internasional. Mr. Ginanjar berharap adalah ketika pandemi selesai, mahasiswa ilmu komunikasi IPC siap untuk keluar tanpa ragu dalam menghadapi segala kondisi.

IP Programs During the Pandemic: Keeping Up with Strict Health Protocols. The Covid-19 pandemic has affected many activities, especially teaching activities in schools and colleges of higher education. The Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII) is no exception, which has set new rules for activities during the pandemic period. One example is the UII International Program (IP). Activities here comply with the rules by complying with the Rector’s Circular and government protocols during the pandemic.

IP UII has one of the excellent programs related to global mobility or international mobility. Through interviews with the Directorate of Partnerships / International Affairs Office (DK / KUI), Dian Utami, many programs of global mobility are  still possible to be implemented online. For example Summer Programs, Internships, Lecture Series, Web Seminars, Student Exchange, and Double Degree. Bridging Program in the form of the development of skills such as academic and learning skills training is also implemented in the form of online lectures. The form can be asynchronous or synchronous according to the Circular of the Rector of UII.

 

Some were postponed, some changes from offline to online

In the Communication Science Department, especially the International Program of Communication (IPC), activities related to global mobility such as the annual Passage to Asean (P2A) program and Student Exchange had to be postponed. Even though they had received offers to implement the P2A program virtually, the IPC still chose to postpone the P2A program. The delay is carried out indefinitely.

“We still hope that there will be an opportunity to get hands-on experience in the P2A program. By going directly abroad. So, currently we can only provide tell to students regarding the postponement of several programs,” said Ida Nuraini Dewi KN, as the IPC secretary.

Various interesting programs with international insight still continue, said this specialist lecturer in journalism and media studies. IPC programs implemented during the pandemic, among others is International Webinar held in May and Career Webinar held in August. There are also Teatime’s regular Talk Show and  Annual Workshop with the theme The Future of Globalization which was held last July.

The Annual Workshop invited Assoc. Prof. Dr. Huey Rong Chen from the Graduate School of Journalism, Chinese Culture University, Taiwan. Meanwhile, the Teatime Talk Show invited Zaki Habibi, a PhD candidate from Lund University, Sweden.

If usually the Annual Workshop is held offline and is open to IPC students and the public, then during the pandemic period the program must be transferred to online. Ida said, in general, several programs such as seminars would still be held even though they were online. Collaboration and research requiring face-to-face meetings and overseas trips where possible will be carried out online.

International Programs in Other Departments / Major

Similar conditions also occur in the International Relations Department. Activities related to global mobility cannot be carried out during the pandemic period. Karina Utami Dewi, as the Secretary of the International Program (IP) of International Relations (IR) Department confirmed this.

Even so, several programs that have been planned and will be implemented in the odd semester of 2020/2021. For example a visiting professor from NUS (National University of Singapore) who will teach in IP for 1 semester. Other programs include implementing IELTS simulations for all IP students and providing mentor academic facilities. Academic mentors are to assist IP students in implementing online learning.

During the pandemic period, the programs that can be implemented in the IP of IR Department vary. For example the Bridging Program and Inspiring Lecture with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. There are also several guest lectures from experts in various subjects in IP. These programs are carried out as usual. The only difference is the form of implementation which is done online.

Even so, the implementation of the program ran smoothly and in general IP students were able to participate well. “Of course there are technical barriers such as connections. This is because most of the IP students return to their hometown. Not all of them have stable internet connections there,” said Karina when interviewed via email.

UII Internationalization Globally 

Dian said that this is understandable during the pandemic period that many programs cannot be implemented as usual. Programs that cannot be implemented can be transferred to other programs. In essence, other activities have benefits and outcomes that support achieving UII Strategic Plan. Including increasing the internationalization of UII globally.

DK / KUI provides facilities in the form of services related to the initiation of new partners proposed by the Department or Faculty. Partners come from both industry, government, academia, and society. In addition, DK / KUI also continues to play a role in delivering information by publishing international activities within UII. Whether it’s mobility activities for lecturers, students, and students.
