Teatime: Berkenalan dengan Indonesian International Student Mobility Award (IISMA)

Indonesian International Student Mobility Award (IISMA) sangat diminati mahasiswa. Universitas swasta, dalam satu kali periode, bisa mengirimkan 24 mahasiswa untuk mengikuti program ini. Beasiswa dengan persaingan sangat kompetitif, sebenarnya apa dan bagimana IISMA itu?

Dalam Talk Show ngobrol santai yang diselenggaran rutin oleh International Program of Communication (IPC) Prodi Ilmu Komunikasi, Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII), Teatime, mengulas soal seputar IISMA. Mengundang Dr. rer. nat. Dian sari Utami, Direktur of Parnership of International Affair UII. Ia mengupas tuntas IISMA. Acara yang diadakan pada 5 Maret 2022 itu bertajuk “Let’s Find out IISMA” dipandu oleh Arsila Khairunnisa, Mahasiswa Komunikasi kelas internasional (Internasional Program).

Mengenal Perspektif, Budaya, dan Iklim Akademik Global

Tujuan dari diinisiasinya program IISMA adalah mengirimkan mahasiswa Indonesia studi keluar negeri untuk membuka perspektif global dan mengetahuai situasi akademik mahasiswa Indonesia. “Biar mahasiswa itu memiliki perspektif global, kultur global, dan budaya akademic global. Jika mereka kembali mereka bisa menerapkan apa yang mereka pelajari di luar negeri, untuk mengembangkan Indonesia,” jelas Dian.

Dian menegaskan bahwa program ini adalah student mobility, bukan kredit transfer. Maksudnya adalah Mata kuiah dengan jumlah jumah SKS tertentu ini bukan untuk dikoversikan dengan mata kuiah di kampus asal. Dan mata kuliah yang diambil di program IISMA akan terlulis seperti apa adanya di transkrip nilai. “Ini punya konsekuensi bahwa mahasiswa akan kehiangan satu semester di kampus asal. Dan tetap harus mengambil semua mata kuliah yang diwajibkan,”kata Dian.

“Kacuali, jika kamu mengambil mata kuliah yang berkaitan dengan mata kuliah wajib yang harus kamu ambil di kampus asal. Nilai mata kuliah di kampus tujuan bisa ditransfer,”imbuhnya.

Meskipun begitu, program ini merekomendasikan agar mahasiswa mengambil mata kuliah yang sama sekali berbeda dari jurusan yang diambil di universitas asal. “Kami di IISMA sangat merekomendasikan untuk mengambil subjek yang sungguh berbeda. Kenapa? Karena kami ingin kalian memperkaya perpektif dari disiplin ilmu yang berbeda. Kalian juga nanti akan memiliki banyak kompetensi yang bisa dikembangkan,” papar Dian akhirnya menjelaskan tujuan dan harapan dari program IISMA.

Telah diberitakan sebelumnya, ada satu mahasiswa Komunikasi UII kelas International Program (IP) yang lolos pada program IISMA ini. Nadira Muthia Supadi, Mahasiswa angkatan 2018, ikut program IISMA dan belajar di University of Leeds, Inggris, pada 2021.

Muda, Semangat, dan Berprestasi

Ia sempat dilarang kuliah Program Internasional di Komunikasi UII. Alasannya tak lain adalah jarak kampus yang jauh dari kampung halaman. Dengan tekad dan niat, ia tidak henti-henti meyakinkan keluarganya agar memperbolehkannya menempuh pendidikan di program internasional Ilmu Komunikasi UII Yogyakarta. Akhirnya kerja kerasnya pun terbayarkan dengan izin keluarganya untuk berkuliah di UII melalui jalur Seleksi Berbasis Rapor (SIBER).

Ia adalah Arul Setiawan. Orang biasa memanggilnya Arul. Di kota tempat tinggalnya, pemuda ini sudah meraih berbagai prestasi yang membanggakan. Contohnya, ia menjadi Wakil Duta Budaya Bujang Song Benuo Taka 2021 dan Duta Wisata Benuo Taka 2018. Di umurnya yang masih muda, ia sudah mengepakkan sayapnya di sana sini.

Pemuda berumur 20 tahun ini merupakan salah satu dari 25 mahasiswa baru program studi Ilmu Komunikasi kelas internasional 2021. Dengan berkuliah di Jogja, Ia ingin mencoba pengalaman baru dan lebih menantang katanya. Ia punya pendapat bahwa ia harus mencoba sesuatu hal yang belum pernah ia dapat selama Ia hidup.

“International Program bukanlah hal yang harus ditakuti karena kelas Bahasa Inggrisnya. Tetapi, karena kita punya niat, tekad dan ingin berusaha menjadi lebih baik,, yakin kita bisa menghadapinya,” ujar pria asal Kabupaten Penajam Paser Utara, Kalimantan Timur, ini saat dihubungi via pesan Instagram @arl_sulaiman12, Jumat (03/10/2021).

Arul mengatakan dengan bersemangat bahwa di masa depan, ia ingin punya pekerjaan impian. Ia ingin menjadi diplomat dan pengusaha yang sukses. Dengan penuh harap, ia berdoa agar UII akan dapat membantunya dalam mewadahi dan menjadi batu loncatan sehingga elak ia menjadi seseorang yang sukses dan berprestasi.

“Saya sangat berharap dapat memahami setiap materi yang disampaikan dosen. Saya juga ingin menjadi salah satu mahasiswa yang selalu taat dalam segala hal,” katanya berkomitmen. “Saya juga ingin menjadi mahasiswa berprestasi di ranah nasional bahkan internasional untuk membanggakan UII tercinta dan pastinya keluarga,” imbuhnya.

Sebagai kaum muda, Arul merasa masih banyak kekurangan. Ia berpendapat masih harus belajar agar dapat berguna serta menginspirasi orang banyak. Kelak Arul ingin menjadi generasi muda islami yang berkarakter, berani tampil, serta menjadi generasi bangsa yang cerdas.

Young, Enthusiastic, and Achieved

He was banned from studying the International Program at UII Communications. The reason is none other than the distance of the campus, which is far from home. With determination and intention, he never stopped convincing his family to allow him to study at the International Communication Studies program at UII Yogyakarta. Finally, his hard work paid off with his family’s permission to study at UII through the Report-Based Selection (SIBER) route.

He is Arul Setiawan. People used to call him Arul. In the city where he lives, this young man has achieved various proud achievements. For example, he became Deputy Cultural Ambassador of Bujang Song Benuo Taka 2021 and Tourism Ambassador of Benuo Taka 2018. At a young age, he is already flapping his wings here and there.

This 20-year-old youth is one of 25 new students of the 2021 international class Communication Studies program. By studying in Jogja, he wants to try new and more challenging experiences, he said. He had the opinion that he should try something he had never had in his life.

“The International Program is not something to be afraid of because of the English class. However, because we have the intention, determination, and want to try to be better, we are sure we can deal with it,” said the man from North Penajam Paser Regency, East Kalimantan, when contacted via Instagram message @arl_sulaiman12, Friday (03/10/2021).

Arul says excitedly that in the future, he wants to have a dream job. He wants to be a successful diplomat and businessman. With hope, he prays that UII will assist him in accommodating and becoming a stepping stone so that he avoids becoming a successful and accomplished person.

“I hope that I can understand every material presented by the lecturer. I also want to be one of the students who is always obedient in everything,” he said.

As a young person, Arul feels there are still many shortcomings. He believes that he still has to learn to be helpful and inspire many people. In the future, Arul wants to become a young Islamic generation who has character, dares to appear, and becomes an intelligent generation of the nation.

Teatime: Getting to know The International Program at Department of Communication UII

International Communication Department program has been running since 2018. International programs are becoming increasingly important when the world is now interconnected. Now humans are no longer isolated by the state and nation, but have become global citizens. International competition and collaboration is a necessity. However, many students still feel that they do not have the English language skills to join the International Communication program.

The Teatime discussion this time, Saturday, August 20, 2021, talked about the International Program at Communications Department of the Univeritas Islam Indonesia (IPC UII). This discussion invited Ida Nuraini Dewi Kodrat Ningsih as Secretary of the International Program of Communication, UII. In this casual chat, they talked about how the lecture process at IPC is, what if you want to change the path from regular class to International class, what about international collaborations such as double degree, IPC UII student admissions, and other international activities at IPC UII.

Regarding lectures, IPC UII uses full English as an introduction to lectures. The same goes for assignments and exams. “Especially for lectures, if there are some students who find it difficult with full English, they can communicate with lecturers who are in charge of certain courses so that they use Indonesian on several occasions,” said Ida.

For some new students who are worried that they will not be able to participate in international programs, IPC UII provides a bridging program, which is a program that bridges students to adapt to learning through various academic preparations.

“There are special courses for new students so they can adapt, the program also includes how to write academically,” added Ida.

There was also Anggi, an IP Communication UII student who at first felt inferior because he felt his English skills were not good. But, after this program he lived, he was able to get used to it. In addition, he also saw that he was not alone, there were several other friends like him who were also still in the process of adapting to the English-academic nuance. “Over time I feel my ability to speak English has improved by itself.”

Teatime: Mengenal International Program Komunikasi UII

International program Communication Department seudah berjalan sejak 2018. international Progam menjadi kian penting dirasakan ketika kini dunia sudah saling terhubung. Kini manusia sudah tidak lagi terskat oleh negara dan bangsa, tapi sudah menjadi warga global. Kompetisi dan kolaborasi secara internasional menjadi kebutuhan. Tapi, banyak mahasiswa masih merasa kecil diri merasa tidak punya kecakapan berbahasa inggris untuk bergabung dengan International program Communication.

Diskusi Teatime kali ini, Sabtu, 20 Agustus 2021, berbincang soal International program Communication Department of Universitas Islam Indonesia (IPC UII). Diskusi ini mengundang Ida Nuraini Dewi Kodrat Ningsih sekalu Sekretaris International program of Communication, UII. Dalam ngobrol santai kali ini mereka berbincang tentang bagaimana proses perkualiahan di IPC, bagaimana jika ingin pindah jalur dari reguler class ke International class, bagaimana dengan kerjasama international seperti double degree, jalur penerimaan mahasiswa IPC UII, dan kegiatan international lain yang ada di IPC UII.

Tentang perkuliahan, di IPC UII menggunakan bahasa inggris sepenuhnya sebagai pengantar perkuliahan. Begitu juga dengan tugas dan ujian. “Khusus untuk perkuliahan, jika ada beberapa mahasiswa yang merasa kesusahan dengan full inggris bisa komunikasikan dengan dosen pengampu mata kuliah tertentu agar menggunakan bahasa Indonesia di beberapa kesempatan,” ujar Ida.

Untuk beberapa mahasiswa baru yang khawatir jika tidak mampu mengikuti internasional program, IPC UII menyediakan bridging program yakni sebuah program yang menjembatani mahasiswa untuk beradaptasi dengan pembelajaran melalui beragam persiapan akademik. “Ada mata kuliah khusus mahasiswa baru agar mereka bisa adaptasi, program itu juga ada di antaranya adalah bagaimana menulis akademik,” kata Ida.

Ada pula Anggi, mahasiswa IP Communication UII yang pada awalnya sempat minder karena merasa kemampuan bahasa Inggrisnya kurang baik. Tapi, setelah program ini ia jalani, ia sudah bia membiasakan diri. Selain itu ia juga melihat bahwa dia tidak sendiri, ada beberapa teman lain yang seperti dia yang juga masih berproses adaptasi dengan nuansa ingris-akademis. “Lama-lama saya merasa kempampuan saya berbahasa Inggris sudah improve dengan sendirinya.”

Teatime: Internship While Introducing Batik and Playing Gobak Sodor

Trying various opportunities and joining several international institutions opens the door to international knowledge and excitement. Feel and experience directly associating with people with different cultures, as well as introducing Indonesian culture and wealth in the land of a hundred palaces.

The experience was passed by Jorgi Radivka. Jorgi is a 2014 student of Department of Communication at the Universitas Islam Indonesia, who had the opportunity to do an internship as a teacher at an elementary school in the middle of the blue continent of Europe, the Czech Republic. She shared this experience in one of the online casual chat programs made by UII’s International Program of Communication UII on Saturday, June 26, 2021. Annisa Putri Jiany led a discussion with Jorgi, exploring his various experiences with AIESEC in Czech.

Jorgi is a member of an international organization whose mission is to spread peace and humanity. His organization is by inviting young people to do international internships or activities as well as to develop youth leadership potential. The organization is (Association Internationale des Etuadiants Sciences Economiques et Commerciales (AIESEC).

In that school, Jorgi has to teach for approximately two months. Many of them do not know Indonesia. They don’t even know there is a country called Indonesia. Jorgi finally brought a map of the globe and showing where Indonesia is located. He also introduced Indonesian language and songs.

Not only that, he also introduced batik motifs by wearing batik every time he went to school and discussing batik with his friends.

At first there were several obstacles he faced when teaching at school . The language barrier is one of the obstacles because English is not the main language of the people in the Czech Republic. This language barrier makes the students not pay much attention during the learning process. But Jorgi has some tricks that he uses to win attention back. “I use the traditional game here. Gobak sodor for 10-15 minutes to let them be happy first. After that they want to pay attention to the lesson.”

He recounts the funniest and most memorable experiences. On several occasions Jorgi also cooks for his friends and the teachers there. He was so happy and satisfied because he managed to make his friends spicy. “They can’t really eat spicy food, but I cook bakwan and sambal matah. They can’t stand how spicy it is, but they’re done.”

Teatime: Magang Sembari Kenalkan Batik dan Main Gobak Sodor

Mencoba berbagai peluang dan bergabung beerapa lembaga international membuka pintu pengetahuan dan keseruan pengalaman international. Merasakan dan mengalami langsung bergaul dengan orang dengan kultur yang berbeda, sekaligus mengenalkan kultur dan kekayaan Indonesia di negeri seratus istana.

Pengalaman itu dilalui oleh Jorgi Radivka. Jorgi adalah mahasiswa Ilmu Komunikasi Universitas Islam Indonesia angkatan 2014, yang berkesempatan magang sebagai pengajar di sekolah dasar di tengah-tengah benua biru Eropa, Republik Ceko. Pengalaman ini ia bagikan di salah satu program ngobrol santai daring Teatime besutan International Program Communication UII pada Sabtu, 26 Juni 2021. Annisa Putri Jiany memandu diskusi dengan Jorgi, mengulik beragam pengalamannya bersama AIESEC di Ceko.

Jorgi tergabung dalam sebuah organisasi International yang misinya adalah untuk menyebarkan kedamaian dan kemanusiaan dengan mengajak anak-anak muda magang atau berkegiatan International sekaligus untuk menumbuhkan potensi kepemimpinan pemuda. Organisasi tersebuat adalah (Association Internationale des Etuadiants Sciences Economiques et Commerciales (AIESEC).

Dalam sekolah itu Jorgi harus mengajar selama kurang lebih dua bulan. Banyak diantara mereka yang tidak mengenal Indonesia. Bahakan tidak tahu ada negara bernama Indonesia. Jorgi akhirnya membawa peta globe dan menunjukkan dimana Indonesia teretak. Ia juga mengenalkan bahasa dan lagu-lagu Indonesia.

Tak hanya itu, Ia juga mengenalkan motif batik dengan mengenakan batik setiap kali ke sekolah dan memperbincangkan dengan teman-temannya.

Mulanya ada beberapa hambatan yang ia alami ketika mengajar di sekolah. Kendala bahasa menjadi salah satu penghambat karena bahasa Inggris bukannah bahasa utama orang-oarang di Czech Republic. Kendala bahasa ini membuat murid-murinya tidak begitu memeberikan perhatian saat proses belajar. Tapi Jorgi punya beberapa trik yang dia gunakan untuk merebut perhatian kembali. “aku pakai permaian tradisional di sini. Gobak sodor 10-15 menit biar mereka senang dulu. Setelah itu mereka mau perhatikan pelajaran.”

Ia mencerikan pengalaman paling lucu dan mengesankan. Dalam beberapa kesempatan Jorgi juga memasak untuk teman-temannya para guru di sana. Ia yang begitu senang dan puas karena berhasil membuat teman-temannya kepedasan. “Mereka itu kan tidak begitu bisa makan pedas, tapi aku memasak bakwan dan sambel matah. Mereka nggak tahan betapa pedasnya, tapi habis.”

Getting to Know Department of Communication Science UII: Greeting for New 2020 Students

On Sept, 23, 2020 at 1 PM, the UII Communication Science Department welcomed new students of UII. Vadhiya as Host and Jiany as Co-Host accompanied this conversation via Zoom Meeting Conference Application. This event in particular will introduce what the Department of Communication Science is about. Department of Communication Science holds an online “Welcoming Day”  to welcome New Students 2020 during the Pandemic

Around 250 new students (new students) of communication science dept. participated in this event. Lecturers, alumni, and the international students in the International Communication Program (IP), the Dean, and communication students generally took part. It was opened by reading the Quran by Ibrahim, a student of Communication Science, batch 2019. There was also religious and educational motivation delivered by the Dean of FPSB UII, Dr. H. Fuad Nashori, S.Psi., M.Si., M.Ag., Psikolog. He explained about the spirit of studying and self-provision in the future as well as improving himself as an UII student.

Head of the UII Department of Communication Science, Puji Hariyanti also gave a welcome and enthusiasm for online lectures that students will face in the future. Furthermore, Ms. Shorlihah (UII Communications Science Alumni, 2015) and Ms. Suwaibah (2019 IP Communications Student) from Thailand also shared their experiences of studying at UII. During his time at IPC, staff, lecturers and students always help, she said. “The main difficulty I get is the language problem, even so my friends helped me,” said Shorlihah.

After the opening was enough, The event continued with the video session. Discusses what the Department of Communication Science is. Explaining communication has 4 areas of interest. Programs and Curricula that exist in communication. Including also introduction to research activities and community service activities. The introduction of the lecturers and staff of the communication science department also showed on introductory video broadcast through the zoom application. One of the freshmen asked about the P2A (Passage to Assean) program. Ida Nuraini explained that P2A is a workshop program and cultural studies held in ASEAN countries. The first P2A, for example, in 2018, students at several Asean campuses, including UII Communications Science Department, went on trips and photography competitions in 3 ASEAN countries: Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia. This program seeks to increase understanding across cultures without borders.

A similar testimony was also expressed by Annisa Putri Jiany as the 2015 alumni of Communication Science and P2A program. She has gained a lot of experience in 3 different countries, and has made friends that are still ongoing. Other questions emerged. For example, what communities are in the communication science dept.? Will it interfere with lectures? Iven as an alumni of Communication Science class 2016 explained that the compulsory courses that are obtained are also related to the community. Therefore, activities in the community actually support lecture activities. Communities at Communication Science dept. can add to our relationships and not interfere with lectures. “In fact, it adds to the advantage of being in a community, because we can immediately practice our knowledge that we got in class,” said Iven Sumardiantoro.

IP Programs During the Pandemic: Keeping Up with Strict Health Protocols. The Covid-19 pandemic has affected many activities, especially teaching activities in schools and colleges of higher education. The Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII) is no exception, which has set new rules for activities during the pandemic period. One example is the UII International Program (IP). Activities here comply with the rules by complying with the Rector’s Circular and government protocols during the pandemic.

IP UII has one of the excellent programs related to global mobility or international mobility. Through interviews with the Directorate of Partnerships / International Affairs Office (DK / KUI), Dian Utami, many programs of global mobility are  still possible to be implemented online. For example Summer Programs, Internships, Lecture Series, Web Seminars, Student Exchange, and Double Degree. Bridging Program in the form of the development of skills such as academic and learning skills training is also implemented in the form of online lectures. The form can be asynchronous or synchronous according to the Circular of the Rector of UII.

 

Some were postponed, some changes from offline to online

In the Communication Science Department, especially the International Program of Communication (IPC), activities related to global mobility such as the annual Passage to Asean (P2A) program and Student Exchange had to be postponed. Even though they had received offers to implement the P2A program virtually, the IPC still chose to postpone the P2A program. The delay is carried out indefinitely.

“We still hope that there will be an opportunity to get hands-on experience in the P2A program. By going directly abroad. So, currently we can only provide tell to students regarding the postponement of several programs,” said Ida Nuraini Dewi KN, as the IPC secretary.

Various interesting programs with international insight still continue, said this specialist lecturer in journalism and media studies. IPC programs implemented during the pandemic, among others is International Webinar held in May and Career Webinar held in August. There are also Teatime’s regular Talk Show and  Annual Workshop with the theme The Future of Globalization which was held last July.

The Annual Workshop invited Assoc. Prof. Dr. Huey Rong Chen from the Graduate School of Journalism, Chinese Culture University, Taiwan. Meanwhile, the Teatime Talk Show invited Zaki Habibi, a PhD candidate from Lund University, Sweden.

If usually the Annual Workshop is held offline and is open to IPC students and the public, then during the pandemic period the program must be transferred to online. Ida said, in general, several programs such as seminars would still be held even though they were online. Collaboration and research requiring face-to-face meetings and overseas trips where possible will be carried out online.

International Programs in Other Departments / Major

Similar conditions also occur in the International Relations Department. Activities related to global mobility cannot be carried out during the pandemic period. Karina Utami Dewi, as the Secretary of the International Program (IP) of International Relations (IR) Department confirmed this.

Even so, several programs that have been planned and will be implemented in the odd semester of 2020/2021. For example a visiting professor from NUS (National University of Singapore) who will teach in IP for 1 semester. Other programs include implementing IELTS simulations for all IP students and providing mentor academic facilities. Academic mentors are to assist IP students in implementing online learning.

During the pandemic period, the programs that can be implemented in the IP of IR Department vary. For example the Bridging Program and Inspiring Lecture with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. There are also several guest lectures from experts in various subjects in IP. These programs are carried out as usual. The only difference is the form of implementation which is done online.

Even so, the implementation of the program ran smoothly and in general IP students were able to participate well. “Of course there are technical barriers such as connections. This is because most of the IP students return to their hometown. Not all of them have stable internet connections there,” said Karina when interviewed via email.

UII Internationalization Globally 

Dian said that this is understandable during the pandemic period that many programs cannot be implemented as usual. Programs that cannot be implemented can be transferred to other programs. In essence, other activities have benefits and outcomes that support achieving UII Strategic Plan. Including increasing the internationalization of UII globally.

DK / KUI provides facilities in the form of services related to the initiation of new partners proposed by the Department or Faculty. Partners come from both industry, government, academia, and society. In addition, DK / KUI also continues to play a role in delivering information by publishing international activities within UII. Whether it’s mobility activities for lecturers, students, and students.
