The Covid-19 pandemic is not an obstacle for us to learn. Various online media have supported us to stay productive, even if only at home. So, on August 7, 2020, the Communication Study Program at the Islamic University of Indonesia for the class International Program collaborated with Elsa Speak Indonesia to hold a workshop Building your Confidence with Enhancing the Public Speaking Skills.” Country Head ELSA SPEAK Indonesia, Yasser Muhammad Syaiful, had the opportunity to speak in this workshop. The two-hour seminar discussed how to improve English and speaking skills in public order to be competitive in work.

According to Yasser, quoted from the Future of Jobs Report, companies’ ability most often sought is communication, whether it’s interpersonal or mass communication. Yasser also believes that the ability to speak English is also essential. According to him, Indonesian people have a low capability to use English. Yasser argues that if we have good English skills, the higher the chances of getting a higher income. Moreover, English is an international language, and many companies need people proficient in using it.

“If we are not proficient in using English, we can lose 30% of our productivity and credibility. We could also lose 32% of international education or business opportunities. So friends now can understand how important public speaking and English are,” said Yasser via Zoom, Saturday (07/08/2021) yesterday.

In the discussion, Yasser opened a question about the reasons why Indonesians are afraid to use English. Fear of using grammar, wrong spelling, and lack of confidence were the reasons most mentioned by workshop participants. So it takes a strong foundation and motivation to be able to use English.

“Honestly, grammar myis still not correct. But I dare say. The matter of right and wrong is later. The important thing is that we have the courage to speak and want to learn,” Yasser said after reading the responses given by the participants.

Four Keys to Learning English

Before starting to learn English, we must know what motivates us to learn. Strong motivation is needed so that we can be consistent in learning. It’s because you want to get a good job or study in another country. Yasser suggests four keys to learn English.

The first key is to prepare a new learning strategy. Learning strategies must be following our learning abilities. Therefore, we must know how we learn. The second key is to familiarize yourself with English and Public Speaking. We can find this in our daily life. Either by listening to music or films in English so that we are familiar with English. Speaking in front of the mirror can also be done to get used to speaking English. Third, we must practice consistently. Without frequent practice, our brains will quickly forget the material we get. Yasser says we need continuous training so that our memory increases.

Then the last key is the evaluation of the various efforts made. Evaluate how the results and materials have been obtained or studied. Evaluation can be from yourself and others. Do not be afraid to ask for criticism and suggestions from others to know how far we can improve. We can also learn from the input of others. If it is still lacking, we must increase our efforts by studying harder. If we are already good, it would be better if it is maintained.

“The essence of learning is not immediately understanding. If we are not reminded again of the material that has been obtained, it will be lost or forgotten. An effective learning process is material that has been taught, repeated again. Don’t be surprised if you like to forget if you don’t repeat it consistently,” Yasser said to the workshop participants.

It’s hard to be consistent in spirit. However, in increasing morale, we must remember the reasons why we should learn English. Be it for your family or yourself. Of course, there is a phase of tiredness and boredom in learning. Therefore there must be self-reward to remain enthusiastic. Yasser said that we must know activities that can increase our enthusiasm for learning. For example, by taking a short break or playing with friends.

Ways to Be Confident in Speaking

Yasser said that although he has had many flying hours by being a speaker everywhere, it doesn’t mean he doesn’t do preparation and practice. He prepares the materials he will talk about and trains public speaking to present what he will speak. Previously, he noted down the framework of what things he would talk about.

“How good are you in presentation, practice and preparation. That’s one thing that can’t be left out. In fact, I’m presenting for now, I practice because I appreciate the type of small or large event. This is one of my processes to do my best,” said Yasser.

He also added that what we do also affects our presentation. For example, it can be blank, cold sweat, nervous, and so on. Yasser quoted Amy Cuddy, a speaker at the TED Talk, who said that great people who do public speaking or become speakers usually do power poses or poses that look strong and dominant. Research results show that doing power poses can increase our self-confidence. This is one of the tips so that we are fluent in public speaking.

Knowledge is power, but the character is more.

“Knowledge is important, but attitude or character is also important. Be careful, if our character or attitude is lacking, the knowledge we get can be turned upside down,” said Yasser.

According to him, we must also have a good attitude or character. There is a saying, “knowledge is power but character more.” That is, knowledge is power, but personality is more important. That is, if we do not have character, knowledge can be misguided. For that, Yasser advised us to have a good personality so that our knowledge can be more beneficial for ourselves and the community.

Not many web managers know that content originality is the key. Originality really determines whether the website can be easily entered in the site search index. Whether it’s a Google search, Yandex, or Bing. The more original it is, the easier it will be to reach the first page of a Google search especially. So is writing web content. The author must ensure that the content is written in a paraphrasing technique. This technique has recently become popular because it makes it easier to write in filling site content. However, taking content from various sources, can not be arbitrary.

Therefore, it is important to write site content without copy-paste. Sources of writing as much as possible are not imitated exactly or taken raw. The right technique for writing like that is the paraphrasing technique. “Paraphrasing is writing in one’s own words and a different grammar from the source referred to,” said Erry Satya, UII Public Relations Staff, online, Thursday (5/8/2021).

The Public Relations Division of the Indonesian Islamic University (UII) held a Website Management Workshop “Website Content Updating” as well as to open and launch the 2021 UII Website Appreciation (UWA). in order to appreciate and update the appearance and content of the site at the unit, department, and faculty level at UII.

Apart from reporting, paraphrasing is a key skill that a website content writer should have. Erry said that at least the web manager in UII could paraphrase by these following six steps.

First, the unit, department, or faculty web content writer can reread all news sources completely. The assumption is, when you have read the entire contents of the source to be referred to, you will find keywords or main points of the idea or idea of the reference source. If it has been found, then the second step can be done. Content writers create a detailed list of all the keywords found so that they can be duplicated in the news to be written.

In the third step, then the site content writer can rewrite all the ideas earlier. The ideas that come from the reference source are written into the content using the original sentences and wording of the author himself. The result is authentic writing.

In the next step, fourth, the author ensures that the main idea of the reference source is still the same as the paraphrased writing. This means that the idea of the reference source does not change. In the fifth step, “the author does not forget to mark unique phrases or terms that are from the reference source,” said Erry in a Zoom Meeting.

The final step is the transparency of the sources of written references so that other readers can also explore these sources. Writing the source of this article is also important as a form of recognition of the author to the owner of the work referred to.

Maka, pada 7 Agustus 2020, Prodi Komunikasi Universitas Islam Indonesia kelas International Program berkolaborasi dengan Elsa Speak Indonesia mengadakan workshop Building your Confidence with Enhancing the Public Speaking Skills”.

Empat Kunci Belajar Bahasa Inggris

“Esensi belajar bukan langsung mengerti.

Knowledge is power but character more

Ada pepatah mengatakan “knowledge is power but character more.”

The fate of traditional markets has been underestimated. But the Perumda Pasaraya traditional market is just the opposite. However, after the pandemic, this market experienced a drastic decline. According to data from the Association of Indonesian Market Traders (APPSI), the sales turnover of traditional markets decreased by 35%. This condition makes traditional market managers must immediately make strategies to bring consumers back to the market.

The topic of the marketing strategy in this traditional market is research conducted by Amalia Nur Rachman. She is a Communication student in the Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII) class of 2017. On this occasion, Amalia shared her research results in a discussion held by the Center for Alternative Media Studies and Documentation (PSDMA) NADIM at the Department of Communications, UII on Thursday, July 29, 2021.

In her research entitled Strategy Integrated Marketing to Increase Shopping Enthusiasm at Traditional Markets, Amalia focuses on a traditional market in the Menteng area, Central Jakarta. The marketing strategy is not enough just to revitalize the market. But also carry out various more integrated marketing strategies.

Some of the elements used by Perumda Pasar Jaya are to promote by advertising both print and digital. Amalia explained some examples of advertising by way of promotional prints for paid advertising products, printing banners and posters. Meanwhile, digital promotion with a totem video wall for events to be held. No one is affected by the year then, he stays at home patiently and hopes for his blessing, so he always gets a reward. If he also realizes that no one can be hit by tha’un other than because of Allah’s provisions, then that will be a way to get rewards from Allah as well. If he dies, he is a martyr.

Veby Novri Yendri, a doctor at UII Hospital and a lecturer at FK UII, cites one of the prophet’s hadiths which tells about the plague. Veby said Indonesian Muslims, especially academics at FPSB UII, should become heroes who help reduce the spread of the Covid-19 outbreak. The simplest way is to be disciplined in applying the 6M and 3T protocols. 6M consists of avoiding crowds, keeping distance, wearing masks properly, washing hands, getting enough rest, reducing mobility, and maintaining a healthy diet. In comparison, 3T stands for testing, tracing, and treatment.

“Hopefully we will be given instructions, and become heroes in the fight against COVID-19,” said dr. Veby Novri Yendri, Sp.THT-KL (FK UII) at the routine recitation of FPSB UII with the theme ‘Pandemic is getting stronger again: how to take care of yourself?’ on Friday, July 23, 2021.

Veby also suggested using cloth masks outside and surgical masks inside: double masks. This activity is an effort to anticipate the spread of the new type of Covid-19 virus mutation.

This time the Faculty recitation was held simultaneously with a prayer together. This prayer is for the big family of FPSB and family members to get healing for those who are sick and get husnul khotimah for those who have preceded.

According to Veby, as of Friday, July 23, 2021, the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 worldwide has reached 191 million. “In fact, last week 184 million. Meanwhile in Indonesia, up to three million cases were tracked, active cases were 561.384 thousand,” said dr. Veby explained the update of data on Covid-19 cases.

What if a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis is confirmed? Make sure the air insulation location must be good. Sunlight should also be able to enter the room. Don’t lock yourself in your room, keep trying to get fitter and fitter. “Even when we accompany us in the village, we invite video calls and ask to be enthusiastic about moving. This is to ensure that people who are self-isolating are really fit,” said Veby telling his experience.

There is no specific cure for COVID-19.

In general, in principle, treat symptoms early. Although there is no specific drug for people exposed to corona, it can handle the symptoms appropriately. When these symptoms are treated quickly, they can be cured more quickly. Based on the advice of dr. Veby, people with covid symptoms should avoid ibuprofen because it can increase the rate of covid-19. Instead, use paracetamol or CTM for anti-histamine.

“If you have a mild cough, you can use what is usually available in pharmacies. Multivitamins C, D, and E,” suggested Veby.

What if you can’t get it?

“Such as not being able to get, the important thing is that nutrition and intake meet and feel better. Try to eat well if it’s easy for us.”

Veby said that at first, the coronavirus was considered mysterious pneumonia. Then later, a variety of unexpected symptoms appeared. Even in medical circles, the corona is also called ‘the thousand faces disease’ because of various symptoms. Symptoms most often occur in the upper to lower airways.

Lots of people are afraid and don’t understand how to deal with some mild symptoms at home. For example, how to remove post-exposed virus carcasses, as asked by one of the participants, Didin Syafaat, alumni of FPSB UII.

Veby said that the public could speed up the removal of virus carcasses by washing their noses with salt. “Washing is like an istinsyak when cleaning the nose during ablution. You can also see various guidelines about corona on the UII Hospital Youtube account,” added Veby. There are also other guides on the Youtube channel, such as getting enough oxygen by prostration. You should also always coordinate every four to six hours with health workers and primary health services in self-isolation.

The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted all fronts—political, social, cultural, and economical. According to  Tempo, in the first five months of the coronavirus spreading in Indonesia, the Indonesian Ministry of Manpower recorded more than 3 million people as having experienced layoffs. Some of these also have an impact on UII student parents.

The Islamic University of Indonesia (UII) responded to this impact by providing tuition waivers. Undergraduate and diploma program students can access this fee waiver in the 2021/2022 school year. This cost reduction program is a form of UII’s adjustment to the pandemic.

Students can choose various types of waivers according to family conditions affected by Corona. There are four types of fee waivers. Starting from relief for students who are not affected, those affected are mild, moderate, to severe.

Severely impacted students can apply for a 25% tuition fee waiver. Students can also choose a 20% tuition fee reduction if they are moderately affected. At the same time, the remaining students can also choose a 15% waiver. Last but not least, students who are not affected by COVID-19 will be given a 10% reduction in tuition fees.

All active students will automatically be deducted 10% from the nominal bill for the first and second installments for the 2021/2022 academic year. For professional students, masters, and doctorates will be arranged by their respective administrators. Requests for additional assistance can be made via the UII Gateway website no later than July 21, 2021.

Requirements

There is a file that the applicant must upload. First, scan the Identity Card (KTP) and Family Card (KK) of the insurer or the person who pays the tuition fee. If the insurance company has a tax ID Number, they must attach a scan of the Annual Tax Return (SPT). The applicant also needs to upload a scan of the insurance payslip before and during the pandemic.

Insurers also need to install a scan of the sub-district original income report for cost bearers who do not work formally. All the files mentioned above must be in PDF format. Students are asked to record the processing schedule. Verification and authorization will continue on 9-24 July 2021. After that, the authorization results will be announced on July 20, 2021. Students must make all payments on 27 July-24 August 2021.

Qualitative research for corporations and public relations is for the advancement of the company. Research is also the basis for company decisions and policies. PR Research prioritises the beneficial interests of company development rather than science.

Research for corporate public relations is the spearhead of corporate image and crisis management. “What we mainly do in research for public relations is why it happened, what happened, and how to solve it,” said Zulfatun Mahmudah, Media and Public Communication of PT. Kaltim Prima Coal, in an expert Lecture on the Role of Research in Public Relations, on July 10, 2021. This expert lecture is one of the enrichments with practitioners in the Qualitative Research course.

In addition to tracking solutions, public relations must analyse the possible consequences of the solutions found. “Then if we take a certain solution, we have to see if it fits or not, and what the consequences are. From that context, what can corporations do, the output proposals are important,” said Zulfatun, who is also a doctoral student at UGM, Department Cultural and Media Studies.

Zulfatun also talked about the practice of applying research in daily public relations activities. “For example, there is a case of river pollution. So people will ask questions. Now, we as public relations need to do research,” he said.

While waiting for research to be carried out, public relations can provide temporary information. “It is true that this incident has occurred, but we will investigate it and conduct research. If it comes from us, we will be responsible,” said Zulfatun, recounting the experience and praxis of public relations when facing crises that hit corporate.

According to him, that is the function of PR. PR manages issues so that companies do not become victims of prolonged public bullying.

Puji Rianto, the lecturer of this course, also asked questions. “What should PR anticipate to monitor the issue like what? Do you use big data or what? We can predict and handle the mass media, but social media is very wild,” he asked Zulfatun.

Zulfatun said that this social media could be an attacker or a supporter. Even the big media sometimes don’t balance it. “What do we need to do? We have social media which is a medium whose delivery is faster than waiting for official media such as mass media,” he replied. “We also have a special division that handles media relations which we call media relations.”

The practise of public relations research in the company is not too critical in the use of theory. The theory is used as the basis for viewing in a practical context.

According to him, if the corporation took a team of research consultants from universities, it could be a different story. “It could be that the theory was used to provide a brief basis for explaining the conclusion’s position.”

However, transparency of interviews and methods is also essential to represent research findings in the community. The PR research can be used as a basis, and we have to see how the public perception, what steps need to be prepared.

“Essentially, research in the corporate world is problem solving oriented.”
