Talking about the days of the final semester when you have to struggle with finishing and writing a thesis, days can seem very heavy. Discipline and a support system will help through that stressful day.

The discussion about the thesis days became the topic of the Teatime program, hosted by Arsila and Ola, students of the International Program in Communication at UII. The teatime entitled “Talking About Thesis Defense and Final Years Student Life in IPC UII” invited Muhammad Aditya Arvian, a student of the International Program of Communication Department, on Friday, March 25, 2022.

Muhammad Aditya Arvian, usually called Adit, recounted his days at the end of the semester. He said his day was not as many people imagine. “Don’t imagine me working on my thesis and waiting for the laptop day and night. Not really. There is also a lot of free time,“ said Adit.

But being too preoccupied with a lot of free time is also not beneficial. The time he has to work on the thesis is enough for him to complete it. Sometimes there is a hard time, and sometimes, there is a time to loose. One thing he underlined in carrying out his thesis days: “Don’t wait for a good mood,” said Adit. “If you’re in a bad mood, calm down first then remember again what goal is.”

Overcoming it is also sometimes challenging. It takes the ability to regulate self-will and reluctance. The word discipline is not enough to help get out of laziness. Setting targets and being consistent day after day is the key.

“I am committed to making progress every day, even if only by making one sentence or paragraph,” Adit said, remembering the process of writing his thesis. Adit noted that the process was often profitable. Because sometimes, there are days when you are very excited and can write several pages at once.

Apart from daily progress, Adit also provides self-rewards to trigger him to complete his thesis. He’ll have a lot of free time to spend on whatever he loves if he can finish before the deadline. “For example, next Wednesday, I have to finish Chapter 2, and I will have a personal deadline to finish on Sunday. If it’s finished before that day, I have a long free time,” said Adit.

In addition to the motivation built within himself, Adit admits that friends are a formidable support system in completing the thesis. “Friends are needed. Very supportive. Many have encouraged me when there is a fear of not finishing the thesis. Some friends can also be friends for discussion. Seeing the progress of other friends also triggers myself to be even more enthusiastic.”

Berbincang tentang hari-hari semester akhir yang harus bergumul dengan penyelesaian dan penulisan tesis, hari-hari sepertinya bisa terasa sangat berat. Disiplin dan support system akan sangat membantu melalui hari yang penuh tekanan itu.

Obrolan tentang hari-hari skripsi itu menjadi topik acara Teatime yang dipandu oleh Arsila dan Ola, keduanya adalah mahasiswa Program Internasional di Komunikasi UII. Teatime yang bertajuk “Talking About Thesis Defence and Final Years Life Student in IPC UII” itu mengundang Muhammad Aditya Arvian, salah satu mahasiswa International Program of Communication Department pada Jumat, 25 Maret 2022.

Muhammad Aditya Arvian yang biasa disapa Adit itu menceritakan hari-harinya di akhir semester. Dia bilang, harinya tidak seperti yang banyak orang banyangkan. “Jangan dibayangin aku ngerjain skripsi dan nungguin laptop siang malem. Nggak juga. Banyak juga waktu luang,” kata Adit.

Namun terlalu terlena dengan banyak waktu luang juga tidak menguntungkan. Waktu yang dimiliki untuk mengerjakan skripsi itu cukup untuknya untuk menyelesaikan. Kadang ada waktu yang berat, kadang ada waktunya untuk longgar. Satu hal yang dia garis bawahi dalam menjalani hari-hari skripsinya: “Don’t wait for good mood,” kata Adit. ”Kalau sedang  bad mood, tenangin diri dulu baru inget lagi apa goal kita.”

Untuk mengatasi itu juga kadang tak mudah. Butuh kemampuan mengatur keinginan dan keengganan diri. Kata disiplin, tidak cukup membantu keluar dari rasa malas. Menetapkan target dan selalu konsisiten hari demi hari adalah kuncinya.

“Aku berkomitmen untuk membuat progress setiap hari walaupun hanya dengan membuat satu kalimat,atau  satu paragraf,” ujar Adit mengingat prosesnya menulis skripsi. Adit menceritakan bahwa proses itu sering kali menguntungkan. Karena kadang ada hari yang sangat bersemangat, dan bisa menuliskan beberapa halaman sekaligus.

Selain progress harian, Adit juga memberikan self-reward untuk memicunya menyelesaikan skripsi. Ia akan punya banyak waktu luang yang dapat ia gunakan untuk apapun yang ia sukai jika ia bisa menyelesaikan sebelum waktu tenggatnya. “Misal rabu depan aku harus menyelesikan Bab 2, aku akan punya deadline pribadi yaitu menyelesaikan di hari minggu. Jika selesai sebelum hari tersebut kan aku punya free time yang panjang,” kata Adit.

Selain motivasi yang dibangun dalam diri, Adit juga mengakui bahwa teman seperjuangan dalam menyelesaikan skripsi merupakan support system yang tangguh. “Teman sangat dibutuhkan. Support banget. Saat ada rasa takut skripsinya takut nggak kelar, banyak yang udah semangatin. Ada teman bisa juga untuk teman diskusi. Melihat progress teman lain juga menjadi pemicu diri untuk lebih semangat lagi.”

The Indonesian International Student Mobility Award (IISMA) is in great demand by students. Private universities, in one period, can send 24 students to join this program. Scholarships with the very competitive competition; what exactly is IISMA, and how is it?

In the talk show, casual chat, held regularly by the International Program of Communication (IPC) of the Communication Department, Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII), Teatime, reviews questions about IISMA. Inviting Dr. rer. nat. Dian Sari Utami, Director of Partnership of International Affair UII. She thoroughly discussed IISMA. The event held on March 5, 2022, was titled “Let’s Find out IISMA” and hosted by Arsila Khairunnisa, an international class Communication Student (International Program).

Knowing Perspective, Culture, and Global Academic Climate

The aim of initiating the IISMA program is to send Indonesian students to study abroad to open a global perspective and find out the academic situation of Indonesian students. “So that the students have a global perspective, global culture, and global academic culture. If they return they can apply what they learned abroad, to develop Indonesia,” explained Dian.

Dian emphasized that this program is student mobility, not transfer credit. You must only convert courses with a certain number of credits to courses at the home campus. And The Former University will write the courses taken in the IISMA program as they are in the grade transcript. “This has the consequence that students will lose one semester at their home campus. And still, have to take all the required courses,“ said Dian.

“Except, if you take courses related to compulsory courses that you have to take at your home campus. The course grades at the destination campus can be transferred,” he added.

Even so, this program recommends that students take courses completely different from the majors taken at their home university. “We at IISMA highly recommend taking a completely different subject. Why? Because we want you to enrich perspectives from different disciplines. You will also have many competencies that can be developed,” said Dian, finally explaining the goals and expectations of the IISMA program.

As previously reported, one UII Communication student from the International Program (IP) class passed the IISMA program. Nadira Muthia Supadi, a class 2018 student, joins the IISMA program and studies at the University of Leeds, England, in 2021.

 

Indonesian International Student Mobility Award (IISMA) sangat diminati mahasiswa. Universitas swasta, dalam satu kali periode, bisa mengirimkan 24 mahasiswa untuk mengikuti program ini. Beasiswa dengan persaingan sangat kompetitif, sebenarnya apa dan bagimana IISMA itu?

Dalam Talk Show ngobrol santai yang diselenggaran rutin oleh International Program of Communication (IPC) Prodi Ilmu Komunikasi, Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII), Teatime, mengulas soal seputar IISMA. Mengundang Dr. rer. nat. Dian sari Utami, Direktur of Parnership of International Affair UII. Ia mengupas tuntas IISMA. Acara yang diadakan pada 5 Maret 2022 itu bertajuk “Let’s Find out IISMA” dipandu oleh Arsila Khairunnisa, Mahasiswa Komunikasi kelas internasional (Internasional Program).

Mengenal Perspektif, Budaya, dan Iklim Akademik Global

Tujuan dari diinisiasinya program IISMA adalah mengirimkan mahasiswa Indonesia studi keluar negeri untuk membuka perspektif global dan mengetahuai situasi akademik mahasiswa Indonesia. “Biar mahasiswa itu memiliki perspektif global, kultur global, dan budaya akademic global. Jika mereka kembali mereka bisa menerapkan apa yang mereka pelajari di luar negeri, untuk mengembangkan Indonesia,” jelas Dian.

Dian menegaskan bahwa program ini adalah student mobility, bukan kredit transfer. Maksudnya adalah Mata kuiah dengan jumlah jumah SKS tertentu ini bukan untuk dikoversikan dengan mata kuiah di kampus asal. Dan mata kuliah yang diambil di program IISMA akan terlulis seperti apa adanya di transkrip nilai. “Ini punya konsekuensi bahwa mahasiswa akan kehiangan satu semester di kampus asal. Dan tetap harus mengambil semua mata kuliah yang diwajibkan,”kata Dian.

“Kacuali, jika kamu mengambil mata kuliah yang berkaitan dengan mata kuliah wajib yang harus kamu ambil di kampus asal. Nilai mata kuliah di kampus tujuan bisa ditransfer,”imbuhnya.

Meskipun begitu, program ini merekomendasikan agar mahasiswa mengambil mata kuliah yang sama sekali berbeda dari jurusan yang diambil di universitas asal. “Kami di IISMA sangat merekomendasikan untuk mengambil subjek yang sungguh berbeda. Kenapa? Karena kami ingin kalian memperkaya perpektif dari disiplin ilmu yang berbeda. Kalian juga nanti akan memiliki banyak kompetensi yang bisa dikembangkan,” papar Dian akhirnya menjelaskan tujuan dan harapan dari program IISMA.

Telah diberitakan sebelumnya, ada satu mahasiswa Komunikasi UII kelas International Program (IP) yang lolos pada program IISMA ini. Nadira Muthia Supadi, Mahasiswa angkatan 2018, ikut program IISMA dan belajar di University of Leeds, Inggris, pada 2021.

 

In the midst of Independence Day, a sense of nationalism is not limited to flag symbols and flag ceremonies. Expressing nationalism in the midst of a pandemic can be done by doing small and simple things, but it can be very influential, done together. This can be done by students who are often embedded as agents of change.

Herman Felani, one of the lecturers at Department of Communications at the Universitas Islam Indonesia  (UII) offered the meaning of nationalism at the Teatime International Program of Communication Department, UII. Guided by Muhammad Daffa Athalariq, student class 2019, Saturday, August 20, 2021, we talked casually, discussing how to fill nationalism during a pandemic.

During a pandemic like this, any nuance loses its passion. August, which is usually filled with various competitions and other celebrations, can now only be done at home. Socializing is only limited to social media or the zoom room. In this condition at least, “If you can’t feel the vibe. But, we can put up flags, put up banners. It’s symbolic. It’s a trivial thing, but it awakens the spirit of nationalism,” suggested Herman if he couldn’t do anything else that was more useful.

On a higher level, on independence day Herman advised young people to convey good things as a nation. “If we can’t get together as a nation, imagine community we still apply. We are still one community by spreading good messages during the pandemic.

At the next level, Herman said that students can do simple and trivial things, but have great benefits. Herman described that many Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) have gone out of business. He gave an example of a neighbor who helps other neighbors whose sales are quiet due to the pandemic. “He helps sell his friend’s merchandise through social media accounts and online buying and selling accounts. This simple thing is not a big thing, but if many people do it, the benefits are great. It can help a lot of people,” said Herman as an example.

For Herman, nationalism is not just an independence day, a flag, or a ceremony. Nor is it about a particular geographic area, nor is it merely the hometown where I was born and raised. “Nationalism is humanity and justice. It’s not about the hometown where I was born and raised by my mother,” Herman said. Because now it is very felt that whatever happens on earth will have an effect wherever we are. Everything is connected.

Di tengah hari kemerdekaan, rasa nasionalisme tak eebatas simbol bendera dan upacara bendera. Mengungkapkan nasionalisme di tengah pandemi bisa dilakukan dengan melakukan hal kecil dan simple, tapi bisa sangat berpengaruh besar dilakukan secara bersama-sama.  Hal ini bisa dilakukan oleh mahasiswa yang sering sekali tersemat sebagai agen perubahan.

Heman Felani, salah satu dosen pengajar di Ilmu Komunikasi Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII) menawarkan makna nasionalisme di acara Teatime International Program of Communication DEpartment, UII. Dipandu oleh Muhammad Dafa Athalariq, ngobrol santai sore ini, Sabtu, 20 Agustus 2021, mengulik soal bagaimana mengisi nasionalisme di kala pandemi.

Saat pandemi seperti ini, nuansa apapun jadi kehilangan gairahnya. Agustus yang bisanya diisi dengan berbagai lomba dan perayaan lain, kini hanya bisa di rumah saja. Berssosialisasi hanya sebatas di sosial media atau ruang zoom. Dalam kondisi ini paling tidak, “If you cant feel the vibe. Tapi,  kita bisa memasang bendera, memasang umbul-umbul. Itu simbolisnya. Hal sepele, tapi membangkinkan spirit nasionalisme,” saran Herman jika memang tidak dapat melakukan hal lain yang lebih berguna.

Pada level yang lebih tinggi, di hari kemerdekaan Herman menyarankan anak muda untuk menyampaikan hal-hal yang baik sebagai sebuah bangsa. “kalau nggak bisa kumpul bareng sebagai sebuah bangsa, imagine community masih kita terapkan. Kita masih tetap menjadi satu komunitasdengan menyebarkan pean-pesan yang baik saat pendemi.

Pada level berikutnya, Herman menyampaikan bahwa mahasiswa bisa melakukan hal sederhana dan sepele, tapi punya manfaat yang besar. Herman menggambarkan banyaknya Usaha Mikro Kecil Menengah (UMKM) banyak yang gulung tikar. Ia mencontohkan seorang tetangganya yang membantu tetangga lain yang jualannya sepi karena pandemi. “dia membantu menjual barang dagangan temannya melalui akun sosial media dan akun jual beli online. Hal simpel begini bukan hal besar, tapi kalau banyak orang melakukannya manfaatnya besar. Bisa bantu banyak orang” kata Herman mencontohkan.

Bagi Herman, nasionalisme bukan sekadar hari kemerdekaan, bendera, atau upacara. Bukan juga tentang satu wilayah geografi tertentu, bukan juga semata kampung halaman tempat lahir dan dibesarkan. “Nasionalisme adalah humanity and justice. Bukan tentang kampung halaman tempat aku lahir dan dibesarkan bunda,” kata Herman. Karena sekarang sudah sangat terasa bahwa apapun yang terjadi di muka bumi akan berpegaruh dimanapun kita berada.  Semua terkoneksi.
