How to Prepare for an Internship

Reading Time: 2 minutes

At the end of the semester, students are required to do an internship. Students are responsible for finding a company or institution where they will study before they are ready to work in the real world after graduation. This internship is important for students to do because, from various experiences of previous alumni, it will determine the world of work in the future.

Maulida Fitria Averoes, a 2017 communication science alumni, is one of those who experienced it. In the Teatime event, the International Program of Communication Department, Universitas Isam Indonesia (IPC UII), routinely holds a casual chat on January 7, 2022. Fia, Maulida’s nickname, told how she prepared herself for the internship. The alumnus, who is now a User Success Executive at Sirclo, also shared how he underwent an apprenticeship.

In a casual chat event entitled ‘The Virtue of Internship in determining future careers‘, Fia admitted that she had started preparing herself for the internship long before the internship period came. “I started researching which company I would apply.engaged in base, and what is the vision and mission,” she said.

“I started listing the company in November,” said Fia. If calculated from the apprenticeship process, it is still 3-4 months before the due internship starts. Fia also prepared a list of companies. She even applied to the 10 companies she was aiming for. “Who knows if I didn’t get in, I still have other reserves,” said Fia.

Course Assignments, Overview of the World of Work

Students are often faced with piles of assignments and need to know what it’s used for. Fia also experienced this. She remembers when she got the assignment to map stakeholders while in college. She even complained, “what’s the point of doing this,” complained Fia at that time.

Now, she is already in the world of work, and she is grateful that she had previously received these courses. “If there are many assignments, believe me, they are used,” said Fia.

Fia, whose work now has a lot of contact with stakeholders, is grateful to have received stakeholder mapping courses from the campus. “I’m holding a corporate client business in agriculture, stakeholders, both internal and external. Then how should we communicate with them. So I was not surprised when I was in the world of work.”
