Teatime: Getting to know the Indonesian International Student Mobility Award (IISMA)

The Indonesian International Student Mobility Award (IISMA) is very popular with students. Universities studies, in one period, can send 24 students to join this program. These scholarships are very competitive competition, what exactly and how do you get IISMA?

In this Talk Show, casual chats are regularly held by the International Program of Communication (IPC) of the Department of Communication, the Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII), named Teatime, discussing issues about IISMA. IPC Invite Dr. Rer. Nat. Dian Sari Utami, Director of Partnership of International Affairs UII. He thoroughly explores IISMA. The event, held on March 5, 2022, was titled “Let’s Find out IISMA” and was hosted by Arsila Khairunnisa, an international student of the communication department (International Program).

Getting to Know Perspectives, Culture, and Global Academic Climate

The purpose of initiating the IISMA program is to send Indonesian students to study abroad to open up global perspectives and know the academic situation of Indonesian students. “Let the students have a global perspective, global culture, and global academic culture. They can apply what they learned abroad to develop Indonesia if they come back,” explained Dian.

Dian emphasized that this program is student mobility, not transfer credit. The point is that these courses with a certain number of credits are not to be converted into practice at the original campus. And Students will write the courses taken in the IISMA program as they are on the grade transcript. “This has the consequence that students will lose one semester at their home campus. And still, have to take all the required courses,” said Dian.

“Unless you take courses related to compulsory subjects that you must take at your home campus. The value of courses at the destination campus can be transferred,” She added.

However, the program recommends that students take courses completely different from the majors taken at their home universities. “We at IISMA highly recommend taking on a completely different subject. Why? Because we want you to enrich perspectives from different disciplines. You will also have many competencies that you can develop,” said Dian, finally explaining the goals and expectations of the IISMA program.

As previously reported, one UII Communications student in the International Program (IP) class passed the IISMA program. Nadira Muthia Supadi, Student Batch 2018, joined the IISMA program and studied at the University of Leeds, England, in 2021.

The Universitas Islam Indonesia/ UII has six scholarship programs to assist students in financing their studies. The completeness of the files and the personal qualities that are well described in the motivation letter is the keys.

Besides helping to reduce tuition fees, getting a full scholarship is a matter of pride. This Teatime Talk show, February 25, 2022, presents Fikri Haikal Ramadhan, an International Program student at the Department of Communications at the UII. Today’s talk show is to discuss tips and tricks to get a full scholarship at UII. Haikal is one of the recipients of the Excellent Santri scholarship. The event entitled ‘Tips and Trick to be the Awardee of UII Outstanding Santri scholarship‘ was hosted by Arsila as the host.

This scholarship is one type of scholarship that provides full support. This scholarship funds tuition and living expenses, as well as housing. The Excellent Santri Scholarship aims to provide provisions for future cadres of community leaders. This scholarship also seeks to prepare students who are ready for the concept and ready for practice. PP UII students (Pondok Pesantren/ Islamic Boarding School of UII) are expected to be able to strengthen and integrate religion, science, and technology.

Haikal advised being careful in preparing the files to apply for this scholarship. Make sure none of the files are missing. In addition, writing essays in motivation letters. Haikal suggested that writing self-motivation as much as possible shows a strong character for self-improvement. “Intention is a must. Not just want to have a free college or try it out. But we really need it and we are improving,” said Haikal.

In building a self-image in a motivation letter, we should show ourselves some of the things we have achieved as evidence of self-quality. What is the dream to be achieved and how the dream will be achieved. This can be related to the purpose of this scholarship program which will help participants achieve their dreams. “It’s not just fulfilling our obligations to study because we have received a scholarship, but how can we grow and improve ourselves while living it,” he added.

In addition to the Excellent Santri scholarship, UII also has several scholarship schemes that can be chosen according to the conditions, talents, and achievements of students. The scholarships are Athletes and Art Champion, Dhuafa Scholarships, Tahfidz Al Qur’an, Excellence Scholarships, and Scholarships for Foreign Students.

This is The journey of a student with a broken home to get the Excellence scholarship at the Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII). His name is Arul Sulaiman. Believe it or not, he said, the power of a verse from the Koran allowed him to lead a completely different life.

In the Teatime, an afternoon casual chat program held regularly by the UII International Communication Department, presents Arul Sulaiman. The Teatime, on Friday, 18 February, 2022, is entitled The Importance of the Personal Branding and Scholarship for Higher Education Students. Arul tells his life story and how he went through his studies with the UII Excellence Scholarship.

Arul grew up in a family that lacked harmony. His parents separated when he was in grade 1 of elementary school. It made him live with a messy psychological condition. “I didn’t pass the class twice. At that time, I was like not taken care of. Never studied, often skipped school,” said Arul telling his story.

At the age of about ten years, God showed a miracle. Arul really believes in a verse in Al Baqarah 143 about patience and prayer as a helper: O you who believe, make prayer and patience your helper. Verily, Allah is with those who pray and are patient. “I believe it. At that time, I applied for all of it. In Al Baqarah verse 143, I really remember it,” recalls Arul of his dark days.

“I will apply for it. I am patient and pray. And so I can think about what I should do, “said Arul. Students who have decided to live alone since junior high school continue to keep themselves busy with various activities to achieve excellence. “I have to survive. I take part in activities that can hone skills, take part in various competitions at the district, national and even international levels.”

“Until finally I got this superior scholarship. I have to get better every day,” this last phrase seemed to have been his way of life for a long time.

College Life as a Student

Getting this scholarship is a matter of pride because the awardee has to go through a fairly rigorous selection process by only selecting 20 people from thousands of applicants. “This scholarship is one of the things that makes me, with the background of my life not being promoted twice, I am increasingly challenged to improve myself, to be better in the future.”

Moreover, by getting this superior scholarship students are properly prepared to become outstanding and active students. “We also have a special preparation class. Apart from that, to be able to maintain the scholarship, the GPA must not be less than 3.7, and you must also actively participate in PKM,” continued Arul. PKM is a Student Creativity Program held by the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education.

Being a student is the best opportunity to develop yourself. Only a few campuses provide opportunities to develop their skills capacity and open networking opportunities for their students. Not a few students also competed to participate in the wild wilderness to participate in international events. The existence of international activities provided by the campus is a good opportunity for students to participate.

At this Teatime, January 29, 2022, the International Program Communication Department of the Universitas Islam Indonesia (IPC UII) talked about campus programs that are a shame to miss. Inviting one of UII’s Communication Studies alumni, Muhammad Akbar Priandanu, to chat casually will motivate students to take advantage of the opportunities and facilities provided by the campus. Currently working as an Event Management Specialist at the PR Indonesia Group, Akbar also shared his participation in UII Communications during his studies.

While a student at UII Communications, Akbar saw many activities and programs on campus that could develop skills and opportunities for international activities. “I used to really take part in campus events. For me it’s a good opportunity. An opportunity for me to develop myself,” said Akbar.

Akbar recounted his experiences participating in the collaboration program between UII Communication, the UN program, and the Passage to ASEAN (P2A) Communication Department Programs. “These programs have introduced me to social humanitarian activities and perspectives such as gender, inclusiveness, empowerment, even culture and historical heritage,” explained Akbar. He was also a Research Presenter at the Southeast Asia Conference on Media, Cinema and the Arts 2021, organized by the Center for Southeast Asian Social Studies, Gadjah Mada University.

Being actively involved in these events opened up Akbar’s opportunities to get to know the international world. Besides that, it also opens friendship opportunities and further development opportunities.

At the end of the semester, students are required to do an internship. Students are responsible for finding companies or institutions where they will study before they are ready to work in the real world after graduation. This internship is important for students because, based on the various experiences of previous alumni, it will determine the world of work in the future.

Maulida Fitria Averoes, a 2017 alumni of the communication department, is one of those who have experienced this. In the Teatime live Instagram, the International Program of Communication Department, Universitas Islam Indonesia (IPC UII), regularly holds a casual chat on January 7, 2022. Fia, Maulida’s nickname, told how she prepared herself for an internship. This alumni, who are now a User Success Executive at Sirclo, also shared how he went through his apprenticeship.

Listing Company

In a casual chat entitled ‘The Virtue of Internship in determining future career‘, Fia admitted that she began to prepare herself for an internship long before the internship period came. “I started researching which company I would apply to. What company, what field base, and what is the vision and mission,” he said.

“I started listing the company since November,” said Fia. If it is calculated from the internship process, it is still 3-4 months before the term internship starts. Fia also prepared a lot of lists. She even applied to 10 companies she was aiming for. “Who knows if I don’t enter, I still have other reserves,” said Fia.

Lecture assignments, Overview of the World of Work

Often students are faced with tasks that are a pile of piles and don’t know what it’s for. This has also happened to Fia. She remembers that she was assigned the task of mapping stakeholders while in college. She even complained, “What’s the point of doing this task,” Fia complained at that time.

On the contrary, now, when she is already in the world of work, she is grateful that she used to get these courses. “If you have a lot of assignments, believe me, they are used,” said Fia.

Fia, whose work is now related to many stakeholders, is grateful to have received mapping course stakeholder. “I’m holding a corporate client business in agriculture, internal and external stakeholders. Then how should we communicate with them. So don’t be surprised when you are in the world of work.”

The Nadim Center for Alternative Media Studies and Documentation (PSDMA) is wrongly assumed to be a library by many students. It’s no surprise that Nadim’s PSDMA is overflowing with books. Nadim accomplished a lot. Nadim is a center for studies and documentation that conducts studies and documentation such as talks, research, and alternative media gathering, as its name suggests. It’s a research and documentation center that focuses on alternative media.

This introduction to PSDMA Nadim became a topic of informal conversation at Universitas Islam Indonesia’s International Program of the Communication Department (UII). Ifa Zulkurnaini, a Nadim staff member and researcher, was invited to this teatime. Lani Diana, a 2018 IPC UII student, hosted the teatime on Friday, September 24, 2021.

Ifa revealed that one of them, Muzayin Nazaruddin, a UII Communications Lecturer (Lecturer specializing in Media, Disasters, and Semiotics) who was the Head of the UII Communication Science Laboratory at the time, started the PSDMA Nadim. “He wants a place where students may perform research, volunteer, share knowledge, and talk.” It’s strange that it doesn’t connect if it’s accommodated in the laboratory facility. As a result, PSDMA Nadim was created in 2008,” explained Ifa.

PSDMA Nadim’s collection includes more than only owned books; it also favors alternative media, which is media that is not widely available. The name NADIM comes from Ibn Al Nadim, a Baghdad bibliographer who lived in the 990s and cataloged thousands of manuscripts.

In addition to gathering alternative media, Nadim includes events that anybody may participate in, whether students or the broader public, such as monthly conversations. “It’s filled once a month by students or lecturers from UII and other universities.”

Anniversary. Anniversary is always a momentum for reflection and projection. The same was done by the FPSB UII academicians at the peak of their 26th anniversary. Various achievements, appreciations, achievements, and lessons learned in the 26th FPSB Anniversary on Thursday (15/4/2021).

The 26th anniversary of the FPSB raised the theme “Being Creative and Productive in a Disruptive Era,” said Diana Rahma Qodari, the presenter. The Milad Agenda, based on the schedule of events, starts with the UII FPSB Development Report by the Dean of the FPSB UII-Fuad Nashori, Announcement of Achievement Award for FPSB UII students, Announcement of Achievement Award for FPSB UII Lecturers and Employees, and the General Studium.

The Lecturer Achievement Assessment is based on the performance value of two semesters for each department. For example, Raden Narayana Mahendra Prastya has published many journal articles. In 2020, he published an journal article that discusses the events of terrorism in New Zealand and Sri Lanka entitled Framing analysis of government crisis communication in terrorist attacks (Case in New Zealand and Sri Lanka). Starting an entrepreneur should be based on research. Quality research in turn will determine the level of creativity and how inspiring the efforts we are engaged in. But that’s not enough. Entrepreneurs must know these four steps in order to become creative and inspiring entrepreneurs. Be a creativepreneur!

“There is still a big chance to start a business in the digital era, for example starting from dropshipper, resellers, and then increasing,” said Adhitya Maulana, MAHIR’s Chief Operation in the Studium General at the 26th Anniversary of FPSB UII on Thursday, April 15, 2021.

Maulana gave four (4) steps to be a creativepreneur in a general studium with the theme Creative and Inspirational Ways to Work last Thursday. This Studium General is the culmination of a series of 26th Anniversary of FPSB UII which takes the big theme of Being creative and productive in a disruptive era.

What are the steps to becoming a creativepreneur?

The first stepchoose a business that pleases yourself. Maulana outlined the selection of important fields according to several favorable and profitable criteria. For example, according to hobby / interest, according to expertise, needed /on demand, and relying on research. Maulana underlined the culture of research so that what we offer and produce is always research based. “So, the business has valid data, not just ‘I think’ it will be sold,” said Maulana.

The second step is creative & innovative. After determining the line of business, the second step according to Adhitya Maulana, is a creative and innovative process. Creating a new business must be different. For example, a business that has never existed before but whose products or services have been researched are ‘market’ needs. Be the first (pioneers) and be different from other endeavors.

However, a creative business does not always have to be a new type of business. Even old businesses can be innovated according to the era or market segmentation. These businesses are usually old businesses that are innovated with different approaches and tailored to the segment market. For example, ojek driver services that were used conventionally are now being innovated using a new approach through the online motorcycle taxi application.

“Innovative and creatives bussines don’t always have to be new, but it can be with different development and approaches,” said Adhitya Maulana.

Meanwhile, the third step is to have a skill set. Opening a business does not have to have all the skills at once. At least, we can one by one learn some basic skills to support the business that we are going to run. Some of the main skills that must be possessed are technical, managerial, communication, marketing & sales, Creative skills & Critical thinking skills (mindmapping), and digital literacy.

Then is Creative Thinking as the fourth step. “This is 100% pure my experience,” said Maulana. The stage of looking for creative ideas to start a business turns out to be tricky. Easy because it’s trivial things that can be obtained just by chatting or imagining. It’s difficult because there may be many ideas that come up, making it difficult to choose which one and sometimes the fear of the product will sell or not. Then of course, they are also creative in finding capital and funding to enlarge the business, which is the key.

It is best if each of us can understand what and how the difference between creative and counterproductive in making works. Many challenges arise to get to creativepreneur in today’s digital era. From a matter of ideas, capital, networks, to market segments. However, if you have understood how, it is not too much to say that the challenge is just a matter of limits in mind. Not only research, but also creative ideas are the commander in achieving the “title” of creativepreneur.

Being a creativepreneur, it’s good to be able to distinguish between creative and counterproductive. “The first is, you can be said to be counterproductive if you work in the same ways over and over again. On the other hand, if you have worked with a new approach, then you deserve to be called creative,” said Adhitya Maulana, on Thursday, April 15, 2021 in Studium. General at the 26th Anniversary of FPSB UII. Maulana is MAHIR’s Chief Operation and a speaker at various entrepreneur discussion sessions.

The second difference between creative and counterproductive is flexibility. If creative people are always flexible and dynamic, counterproductive people work monotonously and always expose themselves to various boundaries.

As a result, creative people always appear as creators and initiators rather than followers and followers. “Usually creative people are always open to opportunities that arise. Meanwhile, people who work counterproductively are closed and anti-change,” he said.

So by itself the audience can judge that creative people are more independent than people who are always counterproductive who always depend on other people in every episode of their life.

So, it’s no wonder that many people yearn to be creative. Then, what can be done to get creative ideas in business?

Five (5) of these to get creative ideas

First, discussion & brainstorming. This process is important to get feedback from others about the strengths and weaknesses, and get different views. This is a kind of anticipation of failure at the beginning of the process of finding creative ideas. Second, multiply surfing in a constructive virtual world and relate to your creativity.

Then the third, “improve the culture of reading,” said Adhitya giving advice. “We can learn from great people in the world who read an average of 40 books a year. The book provokes a lot of crazy ideas from unexpected people,” he said.

Also involve the ecosystem that supports you to thrive and thrive. This is the fourth step. According to Adhitya, this ecosystem is important, for example, he always chooses to associate with people who have the same vision. This ecosystem will be an important support system in building a business.

The fifth point is to practice to be more structured and organized. Neat. “Start to organize yourself and be disciplined. This will help you find a pattern of success in business. Without it, it is impossible for a business to be big and progressive,” said Adhitya.
